Mike Vrabel Retires

It is being reported by 810 sports radio of Kansas City that outside linebacker, Mike Vrabel, will retire from the Chiefs to accept an assistant coaching position at THE Ohio State University.

Rumors had been circulating all week that this move would happen and it appears today that those rumors have come to fruition. Vrabel turns 36 in August and was at the tail-end of his career; used more as a mentor than a full-time player.

Vrabel originally came to the Chiefs along with Matt Cassel from the New England Patriots after the 2008 season when Scott Pioli left New England for Kansas City. I'm not sure how I would have felt leaving a perennial contender for a team coming off a two win season, but Vrabel accepted his role and helped the Chiefs young defense improve and mature over the two years he was here.

Vrabel was an unrestricted free agent after the 2010 season. The Chiefs seemingly have his replacement ready to take over, so this move was probably the best for both parties.

Bill Williamson of ESPN earlier in the week wrote that if this move was to happen, then Chiefs fans should remember Vrabel fondly for the play and professionalism he brought to Kansas City. I will remember Vrabel fondly (even after his arrest this offseason) and his 101 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 2 touchdowns he had with an arrowhead on his helmet.
