This has been heavily debated by fans over the past week. After all, the Chiefs are coming off two straight wins and have seemed to gather some offensive and defensive rhythm. A bye right now is like last year when the Chiefs had won three straight to start the season and then had a bye week that interrupted their rhythm and they then lost to the Colts following their week off. It was argued that had the Chiefs not had a bye that week, that they would have kept up momentum and beaten the Colts. Now, the fans are concerned that the Chiefs, after finally getting something going as a team, will lose that with a week off.
And while it's true that momentum might falter because of the bye, I'm a fan of when this bye takes place. After all, the momentum that fans are talking about are victories over two winless teams. That doesn't sound like much momentum to me.
This is how I view it: coming off a bye were you've won your previous two games and nearly drew to a .500 record, it's like the season is starting over. You have confidence, momentum, an extra week of rest, and something that the coaches have been wanting since the ugly streak of ACL tears began: a week to regroup.
Let's not forget that we lost Tony Moeaki, Eric Berry, and Jamaal Charles for the season, and the coaching staff hasn't really gotten a break to figure things out. So would I trade momentum from two wins for time for the coaching staff to regroup this team before a divisional matchup against the Oakland Raiders? Yeah, I would.
The Chiefs are at a crossroads, they can either continue to rally and play like the playoff team they were last year, or they can continue to regress and look bad against good teams. Either way, this bye week gives the team a chance to figure it out for themselves.
