Haley One Step Closer to NFL Coach of the Year

Todd Haley has won the NFL 101 Award for AFC Coach of the Year.

It's called the NFL 101 because it is voted on by 101 sportswriters and broadcasters around the nation who cover the NFL.

I think that Haley deserves this award. The Chiefs were last in the AFC West last season and were picked by many to finish there again but instead the Chiefs finished first and made it to the playoffs.

The additions of Romeo Crennel at defensive coordinator and Charlie Weis at offensive coordinator were big additions to the coaching staff this season, but in the end, Haley deserves the credit.

Haley, upon hearing of his award, had this to say:

"I am honored to accept this award on behalf of the Kansas City Chiefs. Our growth as a team this season wouldn't have been possible without the efforts of our entire coaching staff who so tirelessly dedicated themselves to making us better each and every day.

While our team's development was truly a collective effort, I am extremely humbled to follow in the footsteps of coaches like Hank Stram and Marty Schottenheimer, who previously received this honor with the Chiefs.

“Our football team made tremendous progress in 2010, but there is still a great deal of work yet to do to achieve our ultimate objective."

Haley will receive the award on March 5th at a banquet in Kansas City.

  1. No one Haley wins the award without being propped up by Crennell and Weiss all year. We saw how good he was last year without them.

  2. I'll agree with you about the help he got this year from his coordinators. I don't think I'd go as far as saying they "propped" him up all year, though. In 2009, he was inheriting a 2-14 football team. But Romeo and Charlie did help the team a lot this year.

  3. Obviously a head coach cannot be successful without good coordinators. But Haley did a great job all year long with this team and totally deserves the award. Plus like NB said, the team was 2-14 the year before Haley came in, and they doubled their wins last year with 4.
