Player Profile: Kevin Curtis

Kevin Curtis was recently signed by the Kansas City Chiefs for the playoffs. Because of this, and because of the lack of performance from the regular starters against the Raiders, he is my offensive player profile. Let's learn a little bit about who Curtis is.

Curtis was taken out of Utah State in the 3rd Round by St. Louis in 2003. He scored 48 out of 50 on his Wonderlic Intelligence Test, which is an aptitude measurement using 50 questions. This is the third highest score among active players.

Curtis stayed in St. Louis from the 2003 to 2006 seasons. He was always in the shadow of the Rams famous wide receiving duo of Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt. Even then, however, Curtis was putting up good numbers. In his four years with the Rams he played in 51 games (including two playoff games), had 136 receptions for 1,714 yards and 12 touchdowns. That's not bad for the number three receiver.

On March 15th, 2007, Curtis signed a 6-year $32 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. That same year he had the best statistical season of his career playing in all 16 games and recording 77 receptions for 1,110 yards and six touchdowns.

His next two seasons would be cut short with injuries. In 2008 he battled a sports hernia and missed the first six games of the season. He finished with 33 receptions for 390 yards and two touchdowns. In 2009, Curtis had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and missed 13 games. In the three games he did play, he had six receptions for 77 yards and no touchdowns.

Curtis was then released by the Eagles on March 18th, 2010.

Curtis battled testicular cancer this offseason and early in the season. On November 12th, Curtis announced that he had beaten cancer and was ready to return to the NFL. He was picked up by the Miami Dolphins on December 13th and played in two games for the Dolphins registering one reception for six yards. He was then released by Miami on December 28th.

Yesterday, the Chiefs signed 32 year-old Curtis to sure up the wide receiver position heading into the playoffs. Because of his age and the proneness he's had to injuries throughout his career, I doubt Curtis stays with the Chiefs past the end of this season. But, it seems like a good signing for now and it brings veteran experience to the roster. Curtis has played in five playoff games and has had 23 receptions for 446 yards and one touchdown.
