What Offensive Coordinator?

The NFL coaching carousel has begun once again, just like it does every offseason. Even in our own division, coaching positions are in a state of flux.

San Diego has probably been the busiest. The Chargers lost their defensive coordinator, Ron Rivera, to the Carolina Panthers, where he will be head coach. Greg Manusky, the former defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, has taken Rivera's place.

Also, the Chargers fired their special teams coach (I want to thank him for his time there though. I don't we could have won that first game without him), Steve Crosby. Rich Bisaccia, the Tampa Bay special teams coach, is replacing him.

The Denver Broncos, after firing Josh McDaniels (who is rumored to be in line for the Rams offensive coordinator position) midway through the season, had been interviewing head coaching candidates this week before hiring John Fox for the job. Fox had been fired earlier in the week by Carolina and replaced by Rivera.

And Oakland is being, well, Oakland. After not finishing with a losing record for the first time since the 2002 season, went ahead and fired their head coach Tom Cable. Cable was liked by many of the players, as well as fans. But, when you're owned by Al Davis, you should expect it. Offensive coordinator Hue Jackson is said to be the prime candidate to replace Cable. But, once again, who knows; it's the Raiders.

As for Kansas City.

After losing Charlie Weis to the University of Florida, this would be the time where the interviewing would start. After all, a lot of the teams needing an offensive coordinator are going out and getting them now. A lot of the primary coaching vacancies are being filled or already filled.

So, who are the candidates?

Nobody knows. I haven't even heard that we've begun interviewing anyone yet.

Now that doesn't mean much. The Chiefs are a tight-lipped organization and don't reveal much. Plus, most other teams have had an extra week to get prepared and ready for the interviewing and hiring process because their seasons ended before the Chiefs' did.

But wouldn't we have heard if the interviewing process had begun? Sure, there have been watch lists by different media outlets about who would be a 'good fit' or who the Chiefs 'might' or 'should' go after; and even those have been few and far between. But there have been no solid reports on actual candidates.

When it was reported that Charlie Weis was leaving KC for Florida, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Josh McDaniels was a likely choice as a replacement. A week or so later, the Kansas City Star told readers to keep an eye out on Mike McCoy, offensive coordinator of the Broncos.

Now, McDaniels seems to be on his way to St. Louis. And for McCoy, Schefter just reported that he is staying in Denver. In essence, we don't have any candidates.

So, what does that mean for the Chiefs?

In my opinion, it means one of three things.
  1. I am blowing this out of the water and we will have someone hired by next week.
  2. We are waiting for a candidate that is currently with another team still in the playoffs.
  3. We are going to hire from within (and yes, that includes Todd Haley taking over as OC).
Either way, it will be interesting to see who will be calling the plays on offense next season.
