Rumor Has It

No, I'm not talking about that awful Rob Reiner movie.

Since the Chiefs season is now over, rumors are going to be flying everywhere. So, I am going to attempt to bring all these rumors in one central location, that being my blog, and make sense of them. Since the offseason officially starts today for the Chiefs, there won't be that many rumors. So, I am going to go over some rumors that were circulating before today. Also, I am going to separate these rumors into two categories: those that make sense and those that don't make sense.

I'm going to have different "Rumor Has It" posts during the offseason just like this one but with different rumors.  If any of the rumors become realizations, I will then have posts on them with further explanation and discussion.

If you have any more rumors you'd like to add that you have heard, please add them to the comment boxes.

Makes Sense

Shaun Smith grabbed testicles of offensive linemen during the season: Although the NFL found the allegations inconclusive because of lack of video evidence, I'd say Smith was very capable of doing this.

Charlie Weis and Todd Haley never got along: Although the signing of Charlie Weis was huge this last offseason, reports all throughout the year were that Haley and Weis never got along. Perhaps, even, that this bad relationship was a big reason why Weis took the offensive coordinator position at Florida. I can see that. Haley is a former offensive coordinator himself and has one of the most heated personalities in the NFL. It wouldn't surprise me if he acted towards Weis like he did sometimes with his players.

Tamba Hali will be getting a new contract soon: Hali is about to become a free agent. He was perhaps our best player on defense and was a big reason our team found success this year. Pioli has done a good job of suring up his players (Charles contract, Johnson extension), I would hope that he wouldn't let such a dominating force on defense slip through our fingers.

Kevin Curtis In, Chris Chambers Out: Less than a year removed from his new contract with the Chiefs, it looks like Chambers time in Kansas City might be over. Chambers has had a dissapointing season, losing starting time to lesser known receivers all season. And his mysterious inactive status before yesterday's playoff game was probably the last time he's mentioned in a Chiefs lineup.

Who would replace him? Why not Kevin Curtis. This guy loves the game of football and has proven that by coming back after cancer. He seems to be the kind of guy that Haley would like to have on his team for next year, especially if Chambers is indeed out.

Todd Haley is likely choice for Coach of the Year: This makes sense to me. He more then doubled last year's wins, won the AFC West, and took the Chiefs to their first playoff game in four years. He meets the criteria of NFL coach of the year's. Last season it was Marvin Lewis, who turned the Bengals around for that season and won the AFC North. I think Haley deserves the honor considering the Chiefs turnaround took a much shorter time than anyone expected.

Doesn't Make Sense

Mike McCoy is the likely candidate to replace Charlie Weis: This might be the most likely candidate, but I don't think it makes any sense. He's had only two years experience as an offensive coordinator and those were with the Broncos. Both those seasons, the Broncos struggled running the football; this is what the Chiefs are best at. Plus, the Broncos haven't really had success since he took the position.

I'd rather hire Josh McDaniels than McCoy, atleast he's had success at the offensive coordinator position, although his personality would clash with Haley too much to work. Although, McCoy did make Kyle Orton a pretty decent passer, maybe he could continue the development of Cassel.

Todd Haley took over offensive playcalling after halftime against the Ravens: It was reported today by Bob Fescoe of 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City that Charlie Weis admitted he was "stripped of play calling duties" after halftime by head coach Todd Haley. This story has then been picked up by other media outlets. We all know how the game went after halftime on Sunday: not good.

If this story is true, I can not defend what Haley did and how the game went down hill after half. But I don't think that this report makes sense. The Chiefs came out after halftime with three-straight passes; that's vintage Weis. Also, I was at the game and then rewatched it on TV and I don't recall ever seeing Haley with a play call sheet. If he had had one, I imagine more people would have noticed it. I will be following this story closely.

Larry Fitzgerald is coming to Kansas City: It's been reported since October that Fitzgerald, the Arizona star receiver, could be coming to the Chiefs via a trade after this season. Fitzgerald came to the limelight of the NFL after the Super Bowl run Arizona had with Haley as the offensive coordinator. And Fitzgerald still has a great relationship with Haley, crediting him with turning him into a complete receiver.

I would love Fitzgerald in KC. We missed on Anquan Boldin last offseason, and this year it seemed like we were one receiver short of an explosive offense. I would gladly give up almost anything but a first-round pick for Fitzgerald.

Unfortunately, that doesn't look like it will happen. ESPN reported this weekend that Fitzgerald's agent has been in contact with the Cardinals organization on a contract extension. The reason I put this rumor in the "doesn't make sense" category is because it wouldn't make sense for the Cardinals to trade Fitzgerald. He's the only reason why fans show up.

  1. Fitzgerald would be one of the keys to my comment in the previous post coming to pass. He would be a big help.
